With a population of only 400,000, Malta booms during the summer months with tourists flocking in to enjoy the country's unique mix of history and summer escapes. (More than 1 million overseas tourists visit Malta each year.)

English is spoken throughout the country as the country was ruled by Britain until 1964 when it became independent. Malta became a Republic in 1974 and a member state of the European Union in May 2004.

Situated just below Italy and with 7,000 years of history, the Maltese Islands are steeped in culture and heritage. The Islands went through a golden Neolithic period, the remains of which are the mysterious megalithic temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands.

As a result, there is an interesting mix of architectural styles and artifacts to explore with many relics featured in the country's museums and galleries.

Malta is also popular for its beaches plus is a favuorite for those who seek unique snorkelling and diving experiences.

If you haven't been to Malta, then now is a great time to explore this popular destination!
